Regional Shifts: Asia's Dominance and Africa's Evolving Role in the U.S. Apparel Market
An examination of the U.S. apparel market reveals a pronounced shift in regional shares over the past two decades. Asia has experienced remarkable growth, with its market share increasing from 49.78% in 2003 to 76.78% in 2022. Conversely, the Americas, encompassing 34 countries, has witnessed a decline in market share, decreasing from 25.38% in 2003 to 14.90% in 2022. Together, Asia and the Americas account for a substantial 91.68% of total U.S. apparel imports.
Africa, comprising 45 countries, has registered a modest increase in market share, growing from 3.00% in 2003 to 3.14% in 2022. Within Africa, North Africa, represented by four countries, contributes significantly to the region's exports to the U.S. Its share has risen from 0.73% in 2003 to 1.62% in 2022, accompanied by a significant 261% increase in volume. Egypt, a pivotal player in Africa, accounts for 79.60% of North Africa's exports and 41% of Africa's exports. Egypt's share of the U.S. market has grown from 0.57% in 2003 to 1.29% in 2022, representing a substantial 268.88% increase in volume.
In contrast, Sub-Saharan Africa, comprising 41 countries, accounts for 52.5% of Africa's exports to the U.S. market. However, its share has decreased from 2.27% in 2003 to 1.52% in 2022, despite a notable 9.11% increase in volume.
